What is a Trunnion Ball Valve?

In a FlowBiz Trunnion Ball Valve, the ball is supported by a fixed shaft (the trunnion) at the bottom and the stem at the top. This "two-point" support system prevents the ball from shifting downstream under pressure. Instead of the ball pushing against the seats, the spring-loaded seats are pushed against the ball by the line pressure, ensuring a consistent, bubble-tight seal.

Trunnion vs. Floating Ball Valve

  • Floating Design: The ball is held only by the stem. Under high pressure, the ball "floats" or shifts towards the downstream seat to create a seal. This can cause high torque and seat wear in larger sizes.
  • Trunnion Design: The ball is held firmly in place by the trunnion shaft. This allows for smoother operation and much higher pressure ratings without damaging the internal seals.
